Get out and play!

In and around Georgetown, the recreational activities are bountiful. From walking trails to more ambitious hike and bike trails, from leisurely picnic areas to campgrounds, from golfing to fishing, from bark parks to a community Creative Playscape, there is something for everyone.

San Gabriel Park, Georgetown TXSan Gabriel Park

Located on the banks of the San Gabriel River near downtown Georgetown is the popular San Gabriel Park. It's the perfect place for family picnics, concerts, and festivals. A one-mile wooded hike and bike trail wanders along the North Fork of the San Gabriel River from San Gabriel Park to the new Rivery Park just west of I-35. Or you can take a 3-mile hike and bike trails along the South Fork of the San Gabriel River from San Gabriel Park to Blue Hole, a scenic lagoon  surrounded by limestone bluffs.

Lake Georgetown

Located just to the west of Georgetown, the US Army Corps of Engineers created Lake Georgetown offers a variety of recreational opportunities.  A 28 mile trail, the Good Water Loop, circles the lake passing through dense Oak/Ashe Juniper forest, bottomland hardwoods and prairie grasslands. While Lake Georgetown is known for smallmouth bass fishing, the lake contains black bass, smallmouth bass, white bass, hybrid stripers, white crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish, blue catfish and many kinds of rough fish. Boat ramps are available Russell Park, Cedar Breaks, and Jim Hogg.RV camping is available at two park areas, Cedar Breaks and Jim Hogg. For the more adventurous, tent camping is available at Tejas Park. Russell Park is a popular swim area with a washed pebble beach.  Be sure to visit the official Lake Georgetown website for more detailed information about Lake Georgetown current conditions.

To the north of Georgetown lies the beautiful Berry Springs Park and Reserve where you'll find hiking, camping, and fishing. The huge pecan trees provide a popular place for picnicking.

 

For special times with your four-legged family members, you will want to check out the off-leash Bark Park located at 151 Holly Street, adjacent to the McMaster Athletic Complex. The Bark Park is situated on six-acres in a beautiful pecan grove and offers separate areas for small dogs (under 30 pounds) and large dogs. For Sun City residents there is also an off-leash Dog Park adjacent to the HorticulturalGardens and the Del Webb Field.

And for special times with the grandchildren, you will want to visit Georgetown's Creative Playscape featuring a giant maze and lots of opportunities for climbing, swinging, jumping, bouncing, running, and twirling. The Creative Playscape is adjacent to Georgetown Recreation Center at 1003 N. Austin Avenue in San Gabriel Park.

And what would a retirment area be without outstanding golf?  We have it covered. Georgetown boasts six 18-hole golf courses, plus a 6-hole layout for casual golfers.  Three of the courses Legacy Hills, White Wing, and Cowan Creek are in Sun City. They are public courses with special packages available for Sun City residents. The other three courses, Berry Creek, Georgetown Country Club, and Cimarron Hills are private clubs. The Kurth-Landrum Golf Course at Southwestern University is a 6-hole, walk-on course open for public play.

Want to combine fitness with social? There are a number of tennis facilities in the area as well as biking groups.  Sun City residents have the opportunity to join a variety of formal and informal groups to enjoy cycling, tennis, pickleball, soft ball, hiking and more - including the Sun City Georgettes who regularly march in community parades and perform at Georgetown High School sporting events.

Interested in canoeing, archery, geocaching, skeet shooting, or flyfishing?  Check out the Senior Adult Adventure Program offered through the Georgetown Recreation Center. For Sun City residents the Hiking Club, Hunting & Fishing Club and the Nature Club offer a variety of activities, plus the Community Association sponsors various adventure outings such as Zip Lining over the Wimberly Valley and Skydiving coming up in September 2011. One of Virginia'a favorite adventures is ballooning, available in Round Rock.
